This has some important correlates for adults and older readers. Cicada is dealing with systemic abuse and treatment as an Other (a theme throughout human history). I would not recommend for young children (though many of the concepts may go over their heads). This is a dark and depressing picture book only suitable for older readers and adults. He is finally retiring at the end of the book. When he takes bathroom breaks, his pay is docked since he is not allowed to use the office bathrooms for humans and must go elsewhere. He lives in the walls of the building because he cannot afford a place to live. He’s been working for 17 years without raises and without resources (since he is not human and that is what human resources are for). Cicada is a good employee who works hard and doesn’t take sick days. But, from her perspective, it’s other characters (ones I’d grown attached to and gravitated towards for most of the series) she views as the annoying ones. ![]() Like I said, she was insufferable in previous books, and for most of this oneshe still tries to live up to herwell-earned reputation. Nesta Archeron is not a perfect protagonist. Maas did a really good job of putting Nesta in the forefront of this novel and bringing her character to life in a way that differed from how she was presented in previous books where Feyre was the main character. Reading the novel through her perspective was endlessly captivating. ![]() ![]() Although in preceding books Nesta was never a very nice person to be around and always seemed like her mission in life was to be as insufferable as possible, as a reader, I know I was Team Nesta right from the moment I picked up the book till the end. It was pretty hard not to sympathise with Nesta’s character. ![]() |
